Breakfast at Boma: A Disney Favorite for Good Reason!
If you’re looking for a breakfast that feels both adventurous and comforting, Boma – Flavors of Africa at Disney’s Animal Kingdom Lodge is the place to be. I headed there recently to celebrate my husband’s birthday, and as always, it was a feast worth talking about. From unique African-inspired dishes to Disney classics like Mickey waffles, Boma brings variety, flavor, and plenty of POG juice to start your day off right.
The Setting
Could this resort be any more gorgeous? Walking into Disney’s Animal Kingdom Lodge is like stepping into another world. The warm lighting, rich wood tones, and cultural details instantly make you feel immersed in the story of Africa. Once checked in, you wait in the cozy seating area near the host stand before being called to your table. Even before breakfast begins, the atmosphere feels special.
The Buffet Highlights
Boma’s buffet is both expansive and unique. It offers everything from traditional breakfast favorites to African-inspired dishes you won’t find anywhere else on property.
- Pap: A creamy white cornmeal that acts as a blank canvas for toppings.
- Chakalaka: A South African spicy tomato stew.
- Oak-Grilled Vegetables: Including asparagus and tomatoes.
- Carving Station: Featuring turkey bobotie (a South African dish with turkey, mushrooms, and egg), carved ham, and the famous Boma mustard sauce—a smoky Chipotle-Teriyaki blend that you absolutely need to try.
Other standouts include pork sausage, potato tots (flavorful and oniony, unlike your average tater tot), and scrambled eggs with goat cheese and chives. The chef recommended the coconut steel-cut oats, and they did not disappoint—coconutty but balanced, not overwhelming.
You’ll also find pancakes, including chocolate chip, as well as both Mickey and Simba waffles. (Pro tip: Simba waffles are exclusive to a few locations at Walt Disney World, and Boma is one of them!)
Fresh Flavors and Unique Finds
Boma shines when it comes to fresh fruit and salads. The Ancient Grains Berry Salad was a favorite of mine, filled with quinoa, barley, dried cranberries, golden raisins, blueberries, goat cheese, and pepitas. It was refreshing, hearty, and so delicious that I’m determined to recreate it at home.
Other fresh options included watermelon, avocado-papaya-grapefruit salad, and Boma’s fruit salad, which all added a bright counterbalance to the heavier dishes.
Pastries and Sweets
No buffet is complete without pastries, and Boma doesn’t hold back. Blueberry muffins, guava turnovers, croissants, apple pockets, and sticky buns are all part of the spread.
The cranberry-orange bread pudding with crème anglaise was an absolute star. The bright orange flavor popped, the crumb topping was crisp and caramelized, and the whole dish came together beautifully. It might just be my favorite bread pudding ever—and I’ve had (and made) my fair share.
Drinks and Extras
Breakfast at Boma wouldn’t be complete without a glass of POG juice (papaya, orange, and guava). It’s iconic, refreshing, and the perfect start to the day. Unlimited coffee is also included, and our wonderful server made sure we had a carafe at the table so we could keep sipping without waiting.
Pricing and Value
At the time of our visit, breakfast was $39 for adults (10 and up) and $23 for children. For dinner, the price is $58 for adults and $34 for kids. There are no Disney characters at Boma, which means you aren’t paying a character dining premium, but you still get an outstanding buffet in a gorgeous setting. For the amount and variety of food offered, I left feeling like I absolutely got my money’s worth.
Final Thoughts
To me, Boma offers the best of all worlds. You’ll find traditional items if you want them, but everything comes with a flavorful twist, often with an African-inspired flare you won’t find at other Disney buffets. My advice is simple: come hungry and be adventurous. Even if something sounds out of your comfort zone, give it a try. The worst that happens is it’s not your favorite, but more often than not, you’ll discover something delicious and different.
Between the food, the setting, and the excellent service, Boma continues to be one of my favorite Disney dining experiences. Whether you’re heading to breakfast or dinner, roll in ready to eat, sip plenty of POG juice, and enjoy the flavors that make this restaurant truly special!
